The Swiss M1940/43 (often designated as the M18/40/43) is a revised version of Switzerland's primary steel combat helmet used throughout the mid-20th century. It represents a series of wartime modifications to the original Model 1918 design aimed at improving camouflage, production, and wearer comfort.
Key Evolution & Characteristics
- The 1940 Modification (M18/40): The shell was refined with a slightly different side curvature and a shallower skirt. These changes were made to accommodate updated weaponry and simplify the industrial stamping process as the Swiss Army expanded during WWII.
- The 1943 Update (M18/43): By decree, nearly all existing helmets were recalled and refinished.
- Textured Paint: To reduce glare and visibility, a matte black or anthracite-colored paint mixed with sawdust, cork, or sand was applied.
- "U-Shaped" Liner: The original full-ring liner was replaced with a horseshoe-shaped (3/4 circle) suspension system that left a gap at the rear to improve ventilation and size adjustability. This one still has the pre-war M18 closed liner.
Identification Features
- Appearance: Grainy, matte black finish (replacing the original smooth olive green).
- Design: Deeply sloped flares that cover the ears and back of the neck, with two distinct ventilation holes at the rear.
- Liners: A three-pad leather suspension system. On M18/40 and later versions, the liner band does not complete a full circle.
These helmets remained the standard issue for Swiss frontline troops until they were replaced by the Model 1971. Even after being phased out of military combat units in the 1970s, they continued to see service with police, firefighters, and civil defense units into the 1990s.
