The Dutch M40C helmet is a rare type of World War II helmet that continued to be worn after the war by the Korps Rijkspolitie (State Police). Below are the key characteristics and the context of this helmet:
Characteristics and History
- Wartime Production: The Model 40C (also known as the Verblifa helmet, named after the manufacturer Verenigde Blikfabrieken) was a simplified variant of the earlier M34 and M38 models. It was produced during the war years using alternative materials, such as textile for the liner and chin strap.
- State Police Use: After 1945, there was a major shortage of equipment. Many helmets produced during the war, or those left behind, were repainted black or dark blue and issued to police units, including the Korps Rijkspolitie.
- Identification: These helmets are often recognizable by the absence of a frontal helmet plate. Instead, they feature the Rijkspolitie emblem (a flaming grenade) and the specific postwar (often black) paint color.
