Imperial Russian Cooper Mess-Tin Model 1909

The Imperial Russian Copper Mess-Tin (котелок) was a standard piece of field gear issued to infantrymen of the Imperial Russian Army leading up to and during World War I.

Key Specifications & Design

• Materials: Constructed from thick, heavy solid copper or a copper alloy (brass), featuring an iron or steel carrying handle.
• Tinned Interior: The inside was lined with a layer of hot-dipped tin to prevent the copper from reacting with acidic food, which could cause copper poisoning.
• Shape Evolution:
  • Model 1889: Typically featured a round or slightly conical shape.
  • Model 1909: Shifted to a distinct kidney or bean shape. This ergonomic design allowed the tin to fit comfortably against a soldier's body or gear.
• Carrying Method: Soldiers routinely strapped the mess tin to the end of their rolled-up wool overcoat or blanket. This roll was known as the "horseshoe roll" (скатка) and was worn slung across the chest.

Many mess tins were produced by the famous Koltchugyn (Kolchugin) factory in Moscow or at production facilities in St. Petersburg.
