Japanese Arisaka Rifle Muzzle Cover

Japanese Arisaka rifle muzzle covers were standard military accessories designed to protect the barrel from mud, water, sand, and dust. Essential for harsh field conditions, they were issued for various models—most notably the Type 38 and Type 99 rifles and carbines. Because these covers were often discarded by soldiers during combat or lost after the war, they are highly sought-after military collectibles today.

Types and Materials

Imperial Japan manufactured muzzle covers in several variations using different materials throughout the pre-war period and World War II:

• Brass / Metal: Early models and specialized variants were made of metal. Some brass versions carry distinct arsenal stamps, such as an anchor indicating issue to the Imperial Japanese Navy.
• Bakelite / Resin: Later in the war, Japan widely switched to pressed Bakelite or resin to conserve metal. These hard plastic muzzle covers are a characteristic piece of equipment from the mid-to-late war period.
• Leather & Canvas: Early models (especially for early Type 38 sight configurations) and training variants occasionally used leather straps or soft caps.

Functionality and Fitment

• Universal Compatibility: Standard Bakelite or resin muzzle covers are designed to fit securely around the front sight. They are mutually interchangeable and fit both the 6.5mm Type 38 and the 7.7mm Type 99 barrels.
• Attachment: To mount or remove a standard rigid muzzle cover, slide it over the muzzle, pull it backward, and twist it tight so it locks securely behind the front sight.
