Post-War German MG42 Ammo Box

Post-war German MG42 ammunition boxes (frequently associated with the MG1, MG2, and MG3 machine guns) are direct logistical descendants of the World War II Patronenkasten 34/41. While they maintain the signature slim, rectangular steel design of their predecessors, they feature specific modern alterations engineered for the West German Bundeswehr.

  • Post-war: Made for the shorter 7.62x51mm NATO (.308) cartridge.
  • WWII: Made for the longer 8x57mm IS (8mm Mauser) cartridge.
• Box Width
  • Post-war: Narrow profile (approximately 7.5 cm wide) because the NATO ammunition belts are shorter.
  • WWII: Wider profile to accommodate the longer 8mm cartridges.
• Markings and Stamps
  • Post-war: Stamped with NATO Stock Numbers (NSN), Bundeswehr property stamps, or completely unmarked.
  • WWII: Stamped with waffenamts (German military inspection stamps), 3-letter manufacturer codes, and the wartime years (for example, bzl42).

• The Bundeswehr MG3 Box: These boxes typically contain a standard 250-round linked belt of 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition. They use the exact same latches and folding handles as the WWII variants. This makes them popular among re-enactors looking for an affordable alternative to original WWII boxes.
• The Yugoslavian M53 Pitfall: Be careful not to confuse post-war German boxes with post-war Yugoslavian examples. Yugoslavia produced the M53 (a direct clone of the MG42), but continued to use the original 8mm Mauser caliber. Yugoslavian M53 boxes are wider than post-war German boxes and often bear Cyrillic letters or a Yugoslavian communist star.
• Internal Rubber Gaskets: Unlike early wartime aluminum or steel boxes, post-war West German boxes almost always have rubber or synthetic seals inside the lid to protect the ammunition from water and dirt.
