Officially, this model was designated by the U.S. Army as the Pocket, Magazine, Pistol M1918. The pouch was specifically designed to carry two magazines (each holding 7 rounds) for the legendary semi-automatic Colt M1911 .45 ACP pistol.

Characteristic of the Model 1918 (and its predecessor, the Model 1912) are the two separate snap fasteners(often of the Lift-the-Dot type) on the front used to close the flap. This is in contrast to the later World War II variants (such as the M1923), which were typically secured with a single central snap. Due to the massive surpluses from 1918, these pouches were also reissued and widely used during World War II.
