Képi Noir Foreign Legion
€ 50,00
The képi of the French Foreign Legion is one of the most recognizable military symbols worldwide. A strict distinction is made between the famous white képi for enlisted men and the black képi for cadre.
1. Képi Blanc (White Képi)
This is the symbol of the "ordinary" legionnaire.
- Meaning: The white color arose historically because the original khaki cotton covers faded from repeated washing in the harsh North African sun.
- Ceremony: New recruits are only allowed to wear the white képi after completing the infamous Marche Képi Blanc (a march of approximately 50-60 km) at the end of their first month of basic training.
- Who wears it? Only enlisted men (Legionnaires through Corporals) wear the white version.
2. Képi Noir (Black Képi)
As soon as a legionnaire advances in rank, the headgear changes.
- Features: The top is red and the bandeau (lower band) is dark blue/black.
- Who wears it? Non-commissioned officers (from sergeant) and officers.
- Exception: Corporal-chiefs with more than 15 to 17.5 years of service may also wear the black kepi as a mark of honor.
