The French Mle 52 Buckle Ranger boots, officially known as the Brodequin de Marche à Jambière Attenante (BMJA) Modèle 1952, are iconic military boots that set the standard for the French army in the post-war period.
Key Features
- Design: Based on the American M43 boots from World War II. They feature an integrated leather gaiter at the top, fastened with two buckles.
- Material: Made of extremely thick, stiff cowhide. Original models were always brown (often referred to as "Rangers Maroons"); only after the 1970s was the color changed to black for later models.
- Sole: Features a robust rubber sole with a "commando" tread, usually attached with a stitched Goodyear welted construction.
- Evolution of the Buckle: Early versions from 1952 sometimes had a "Y"-shaped strap with a single buckle, but from 1956 onwards this was replaced by the more common two parallel straps for better ankle support.
Historical Use
The Mle 52 saw widespread use during the Algerian War (1954–1962), with priority given to airborne troops (paratroopers). Due to the stiffness of the leather, they were known for a very long break-in period, but also for their extreme durability.
Difference to the BM65
Although often confused with the later BM65, the Mle 52 is recognizable by:
- The brown color (the BM65 is standard black).
- The construction where the cuff is often stitched to the boot as a separate piece of leather, while later models integrated it more as a single piece.
Size: 42
Due to the stiffness, it is difficult to enter.
