Spanish M42 Helmet "Modelo Z"
€ 200,00
The Spanish M1942 "Modelo Z" is a steel combat helmet that was used by the Spanish Armed Forces from 1942 until the 1980s. Although the helmet looks very similar to the German Stahlhelm (particularly the M35 and M40 models), there are clear differences in construction and quality.
Key features
- Emblem holder: The most recognizable feature is the metal bracket at the front. A detachable brass emblem of the Spanish Army (Ejército de Tierra) could be slid onto this for ceremonies or parades.
- Steel and rim: The helmet is made of thinner and lower-quality steel than its German counterparts, making it lighter but also more prone to dents. The rim of the helmet is cut straight ("raw edge") and not folded over like on the early German models.
- Interior and rivets: The interior is simple and consists of three leather flaps with felt shock absorbers. The shell has seven holes for attaching the liner and the chin strap, plus two ventilation holes.
- Color: The helmets are painted olive green by default for the army, while the Guardia Civil often used grey versions.
Evolution: The M42/79 model
- In 1979, the helmet underwent a modernization in which the old leather liner was replaced by a more modern version made of synthetic material/canvas. This type is known as the M42/79 and remained in use until the introduction of composite helmets (such as the MARTE) in the 1980s.
