White Swiss M18/63 Steel Helmet
€ 50,00
The white Swiss M18/63 helmet is a variant of the classic steel M18 combat helmet that was specifically issued to the Civil Protection (Luftschutz) or other emergency services in Switzerland. While the standard military versions after 1943 were anthracite black with a rough texture, helmets for the civilian sector were often repainted white or bright yellow for better visibility.
Features and History
- The M18/63 is the last major evolution of the model designed in 1918 by the artist Charles L'Eplattenier and Colonel Imboden of the Swiss Army.
- Model name: The designation "63" refers to the modification of the interior in 1963. In this type, the lacing at the top of the leather headband was replaced by a more modern construction without eyelets.
- Color: The white color usually indicates use by the Civil Protection or sometimes by the Military Police (often with a red band or text), although the standard civilian color was often yellow.
- Material: These helmets are usually made of manganese steel, although lighter aluminum (M46) variants have also been produced for civil protection that are outwardly identical.
- Design: The helmet is known for its characteristic deep "skirt" at the back and sides, intended to protect the wearer against the harsh winds in the Alps. There are two ventilation holes at the rear.
Usage
- The M18 series was one of the longest-serving helmets in the world and was used by the Swiss Army until approximately 1975, after which it was succeeded by the M71.
