Royal Australian Engineers Slouch Hat

The Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) slouch hat is a version of the iconic Australian Army headwear, distinguished by specific insignia and colors that signify the wearer’s corps affiliation.

• Rising Sun Badge: Traditionally worn on the left side of the upturned brim.
• Puggaree: The standard puggaree is light khaki with seven pleats (six for the states and one for the territories). In the RAE, specific historical puggarees (such as dark blue with a light blue fold) were used in the past, but the current standard follows general Army patterns with a corps-specific unit color patch.
• Unit Colour Patch (UCP): For the RAE, the UCP typically features a red feature on a purple field.
• RAE Badge: While the Rising Sun badge is on the brim, the RAE Corps badge features a crown and the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense"  within a leather garter.
