Dutch Folding Shovel Carrier

The canvas cover (pouch) for the Dutch folding shovel is directly based on the American WWII M1943 design. Just like the French, the Royal Netherlands Army (KL) took over large quantities of American equipment after the Second World War and later started its own domestic production.

Characteristics of the Dutch Canvas Cover

• The Model: The Dutch cover is an almost exact copy of the American 2nd pattern pouch. It features a semi-circular flap that closes with a sturdy press stud.
• Attachment: On the back is the iconic double metal hook (wire hanger). This was used to hook the cover onto the pistol belt or the backpack.
• Color: The color is usually olive drab (OD7) or the typical Dutch post-war army green, which sometimes turns out slightly more yellow or greyish than the original American shades.

Use within the Army

The cover was part of the M52 webbing equipment (the so-called British-American hybrid model) in the 1950s and 1960s. It remained in use until the introduction of plastic and DPM camouflage covers for the later three-piece folding shovels.
