U.S. 1903 Marksman Medal
€ 85,00
The 1903 Marksman’s Badge of the National Guard of Pennsylvania (NGP) is a state-level military proficiency award. It was awarded to members who met specific requirements for rifle or pistol marksmanship. During this period, state militias such as the NGP maintained their own independent standards, even before the U.S. Army introduced federal standards in 1903.
Features of the badge
- Design: The badge usually displays the coat of arms of the State of Pennsylvania within a keystone. The obverse reads "MARKSMAN’S BADGE", while the reverse often features the large letters "NGP".
- Bars: These medals are modular. Annual buckles with years (such as "1903") were added to the ribbon to indicate consecutive years of qualification.
- Manufacturer: Most original examples from this era were made by J.K. Davison in Philadelphia.
Variations:
- Rifle vs. Pistol: Rifle badges are the most common. Rarer pistol versions are sometimes decorated with gilding or white enamel for multi-year achievements.
- Material: Most badges are made of patinated copper or bronze, but Sterling silver versions also exist for shooters who qualified five years in a row.
