Dutch Gas Mask Model K

The Dutch Gas Mask Model K (often referred to as the T1 K-52 or K-53 mask) was the standard gas mask of the Dutch Armed Forces during the early Cold War. The mask was introduced in 1952 following the Korean War and the rising threat of an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) conflict. It remained in use with the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Navy well into the 1970s.

Key Specifications and Features

• Manufacturers: Fabricated by the well-known Dutch rubber manufacturers Vredestein and Hevea. Approximately 400,000 units were produced between 1951 and 1954.
• Material: Made of dark green natural rubber with molded-in canvas (cotton) for reinforcement.
• Visor: Equipped with two large, round glass eyepieces with metal rims.
• Filter System: The filter canister (usually type A-6) screws directly onto the front at mouth level. Some variants featured dual threading to accommodate both 40mm and 60mm filters.
• Interior: Features an internal rubber chin cup for an improved facial seal.

Modifications and Variants

• The Exhalation Valve (1960 Modification): Early models (from 1952/1953) were later found to have a design flaw. The exhalation valve suffered from a dynamic leak, leaving the mask with insufficient protection against the nerve gases emerging at the time. In 1960, the exhalation valve on most masks was modified and fitted with a protective cap to ensure air could only flow outwards.
• Marine Corps Version: A specific Marine Corps (Mariniers) version of the Model K existed.
• Complete Kit: The set was originally issued in a canvas carrying bag with shoulder straps.
