Austrian Einheitsfeldmütze
€ 35,00
The Einheitsfeldmütze refers to the standard field cap used in the 1950s by Austrian government services (such as the police, Gendarmerie, and the Bundesheer after its establishment). The design is closely based on the German M43 field cap model from World War II.
Key Features
- Model: The cap has the classic M43 design, with a stiff peak and fold-down side and back panels that can be folded over the ears and neck and fastened at the front.
- Color: The color was typically black or a shade of gray, depending on the specific service (army, police, or customs).
- Material: Early versions were made of wool or a wool blend. Later versions, produced well into the modern era, use durable polyester/viscose blends.
- Insignia: A red-white-red Austrian cockade (a round insignia) is attached to the front, above the buttons. Sometimes a specific service emblem was worn, such as a combined eagle for the police or gendarmerie.
Use and Variants
The "1950" version formed the basis for uniform caps that remained in use for decades.
- Bundesheer (Army): Used the olive green version, often without additional piping, with the national cockade.
- Police/Gendarmerie (Sicherheitswache): Wore a similar model, often with red piping around the crown of the cap to indicate rank.
- Customs (Zollwache): Used a gray or green version, recognizable by the green piping.
These caps, especially the originals from the early 1950s, are sought-after collector's items that represent post-war Austrian military and paramilitary history.
