M-56 Folding Shovel Carrier

The M1956 (M56) Entrenching Tool Carrier:

This was designed as part of the 'Individual Load Carrying Equipment' (ILCE) system. This olive drab (OD) cotton canvas cover was introduced after the Korean War and heavily used during the Vietnam War. The cover was made for the M1943 folding shovel or the M1951 combination tool (featuring a folding pick head).

Key Specifications and Features

• Material and Construction: Made from heavy-duty cotton canvas. The opening features internal leather reinforcement tabs. This prevents the sharp metal edges of the shovel from wearing through the fabric.
• The Closure: A simple, robust metal snap dome keeps the upper flap securely in place. The handle of the shovel protrudes downwards through a designated opening at the bottom.
• Bayonet Attachment: The front face features a vertical strap with a snap and two metal M1910 grommets. This allowed soldiers to carry a matching bayonet scabbard (such as the M5, M5A1, M6, or M7) directly on the shovel cover.
• Rear Attachment: Early M1956 models utilized fixed metal slide keepers. However, many surplus variants or field-modified covers use standard metal ALICE clips on the back. This makes the cover fit perfectly on web belts, combat suspenders, and backpacks.
