Trench Art WW I German 15cm Schweres Feld Haubitze Casing
€ 35,00
WWI trench art made from German 15cm sFH 13 (Schweres Feld Haubitze) casings is highly sought after by collectors. This is due to the impressive size and high copper content of the ammunition. These heavy field howitzers were nicknamed "five-nines" by British troops (because of the 5.9-inch caliber). The enormous brass casings were transformed by soldiers and civilians into vases, tobacco jars, and other souvenirs.
Specifications and Identification
To check if a casing is authentic for the 15cm sFH 13, you can look for:
- Height: Approximately 113 mm for the standard short casing.
- Caliber: 149.7 mm to 150 mm (5.9 inches).
- Bottom diameter: Approximately 170 mm.
- Markings: On the bottom, you will find the manufacturer (GFSP), the year of manufacture (1916), and the model designation "Sp197.".
Common Styles
Due to the large diameter and thick brass, the casing was ideal for processing:
- Hammed vases: Using the repoussé technique, floral motifs, regimental emblems, or place names such as "Verdun" or "Somme" were applied from the inside.
- Engraved relics: Soldiers scratched names, dates, or detailed scenes into the metal using nails or other tools.
- Utensils: Due to their weight, they were often processed into tobacco pots and coal scuttles.
