Russian M-36 Helmet
The SSh-36 (Stalnoy Shlem 36 / Steel Helmet 36) is a combat helmet introduced in 1936 by the Soviet Russian Red Army. Among collectors and historians, the helmet is known as the "Shvartz" helmet, named after its designer, First Lieutenant Aleksandr Abramovich Shvartz.
Design Features
- Distinctive shape: The helmet has a highly characteristic appearance with a large protruding front brim and wide flares over the ears for extra protection. This gives the model a slightly "Germanic" look.
- The crest (comb): On top of the helmet is a small metal crest. This was originally intended to deflect saber blows and covered ventilation holes (inspired by the French Adrian helmet). In practice, however, the crest often let rainwater through.
- Liner: The early liner was also designed by Shvartz and consisted of a fabric or leather system with a felt lining.
- Paint: The helmets were usually painted dark green or khaki. A red Soviet star (sometimes just the outline) was often stenciled onto the forehead.
Historical Deployment and Nicknames
The SSh-36 was the Soviet Union's first mass-produced steel helmet of its own design. The model was deployed in various early conflicts:
- The Spanish Civil War (supplied as support to the Republicans).
- The Battle of Khalkhin Gol (1939) against the Japanese. Because of this conflict, the helmet earned the iconic nickname "Khalkingolka" among soldiers.
- The Winter War against Finland (1939-1940). During this freezing winter, many soldiers cut out the liner to wear the helmet over their thick fur hats (ushanka).
- The early years of World War II (Great Patriotic War).
Replacement
Although the helmet was revolutionary for the Soviets, the design proved to have flaws in practice. The wide brims restricted the soldier's field of vision and offered insufficient bullet protection. Furthermore, production was complex and expensive. From 1939 onwards, production was gradually phased out and the helmet was succeeded by the simpler SSh-39 and SSh-40 helmets.
The helmet is in used condition and lacks the liner and chin strap.
