Swiss medal
€ 15,00
This concerns a historical commemorative medal from the First World War, issued by the Schweizerische Nationalspende (the Swiss National Fund).
This fund was established in 1918 to alleviate the economic hardship of mobilized soldiers and their families, as adequate wage compensation did not yet exist at the time for the men guarding the borders.
Characteristics of this object:
- Designer: The signature is that of Hans Frei (1868–1947), a very well-known Swiss medallist and sculptor from Basel. He was known for his craftsmanship in capturing patriotic and human themes.
- Image: The medal usually depicts a symbolic scene, such as a soldier with a helmet, characteristic of Frei's style.
- Purpose: The proceeds from the sale of these medals (often 5 or 10 francs) went directly to the fund for the soldiers and their families left behind.
- Historical value: It marks the end of the "Aktivdienst" (1914–1918) in Switzerland and the enormous social pressure that the mobilization placed on the population.
