The French M1958 bayonet is a short knife bayonet originally developed for the MAS 49/56 semi-automatic rifle. The design is a shortened and modified version of the earlier M1956 bayonet.
Specifications and Features.
- Blade: A two-edged blade, often featuring a black phosphate finish for standard military versions.
- Dimensions: The overall length is approximately 32.5 cm (13.25 inches), with a blade length of approximately 20 cm (8 to 8.5 inches).
- Handle: Fitted with plastic (synthetic) grip scales, usually attached with rivets.
- Markings: Examples may be marked with "MAT F", indicating production by the Manufacture d'armes de Tulle.
Use and Compatibility.
- MAS 49/56: The bayonet was standard equipment for this rifle.
- FAMAS: The design of the early FAMAS bayonet is virtually identical to that of the M1949/56 (M1958), except that on the FAMAS the bayonet is mounted above the barrel instead of below it.
