US Crusher Cap
€ 55,00
The American "Crusher" cap (also known as the 50-mission crush) is an iconic military officer's cap from World War II, inextricably linked to pilots of the US Army Air Forces (USAAF).
Here are the key features of this cap:
- Origin: Originally, it was a standard officer's cap with a metal ring (stiffener) to keep it in shape. However, pilots removed this ring so they could comfortably wear their heavy headsets over their caps during flights.
- The "50-Mission" Look: Due to intensive use and headset wear, the cap became deformed and "crushed." This slouched, worn-in look became a status symbol; it proved the pilot was a seasoned veteran who had flown many missions.
- Special Production: Due to its popularity, manufacturers (such as Bancroft) began producing special "lightweight" versions with a flexible leather peak that could literally fold up and fit in a jacket pocket. Features: The cap is usually made of Olive Drab (OD) wool for winter or khaki cotton for summer, featuring a brown leather peak, a chin strap, and the gold officer's badge (the American eagle).
