€ 325,00
The Swiss Pioneer-Faschinenmesser Modell 1842/52 is an improved version of the 1842 model. It was primarily issued to engineering, pioneer, and artillery units for vegetation removal and construction work.
Key specifications and variants
- The 1842/52 is characterized by a "gladius"-style brass hilt and a heavy, straight blade. Collectors typically categorize it into subtypes based on the characteristics of the hilt and the blade:
Blade types:
- Sawback (Sägerücken): The most common pioneer version, with approximately 60 sharp teeth along the spine for woodworking.
- Double-edged: Some artillery variants (such as Type B and C) have a double-edged blade with a groove (blood groove) instead of a sawback.
Hull details:
- One-piece ribbed brass grip with a round pommel. The grip typically has 26 or 27 grooves, while the guard has between 4 and 6 grooves, depending on the specific production variant.
- Dimensions: The total length is approximately 66-67 cm, with a blade length of approximately 50-52 cm.
Production and markings
- Main manufacturers: Most were produced in Solingen, Germany, by manufacturers such as Wester & Co., F. Hörster, Clemen & Jung, and Gebrüder Weyersberg. Later versions were also made by Waffenfabrik Neuhausen in Switzerland.
- Stamps: Manufacturer's stamp on the guard. You will often find a serial number followed by the last two digits of the year (e.g., "1890" or "85") on the hilt.
