The Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) M34 early style helmet with "bulgy vents" is a rare and highly sought-after variant of the German civic helmet. It is distinguished by its lightweight steel or metal construction and a specific "square dip" shell profile.
Key Features of the Bulgy Vent M34
- Ventilation: Unlike later models with flush "salt shaker" holes, this version features exaggerated, embossed groups of seven ventilation holes on each side of the crown, often referred to as "bulgy" or "bulged" vents.
- Paint and Color: These early examples are predominantly finished in apple or pea green or field grey. Later Luftschutz models transitioned to a dark blue color in 1938.
- RLB Decal: It typically features the first pattern RLB decal on the front, which was used from 1933 until approximately 1936 or 1938 before being replaced by the large-winged "Luftschutz" insignia. A rare green-colored version of this decal is also occasionally observed.
- Liner and Rivets:
- Early models may use a three-rivet system to hold the liner.
- Liners are often the M31 civic style made of leather, sometimes featuring cork spacers between the liner and shell.
- Chinstraps can vary, with some early versions featuring a "carbine clip" or a black leather claw buckle.
- Markings: These shells are frequently found without visible maker or size stamps in the steel, which is considered normal for this civic model.
Historical Context
The RLB was formed in 1933 as a voluntary civilian air protection league. The early M34 "bulgy vent" shells represent some of the first standardized headgear for the organization before production shifted to more common designs like the "Gladiator" style in 1938.
