€ 125,00
The U.S. M5A1 Bayonet is a military blade specifically designed for the M1 Garand rifle. Adopted in 1953, it served as the final bayonet design for the M1 Garand, replacing previous models like the 10-inch M1 bayonet.
Key Specifications & Design
- Dimensions: It features a 6.75-inch blade and has an overall length of 11.5 inches.
- Unique Mounting: Unlike earlier bayonets with a muzzle ring, the M5 series uses a mounting stud that locks directly into the gas cylinder lock screw of the M1 Garand.
- Blade Characteristics: The blade is sharpened for its full length on the bottom side and roughly 3.5 inches on the upper edge. It does not have a "blood groove" (fuller).
- Dual-Purpose: It was designed to function both as a combat bayonet and a general utility/fighting knife.
History & Usage
- Era: While adopted in July 1953—coinciding with the end of the Korean War—it was primarily used during the Cold War and Vietnam War eras.
- Improvement: The M5A1 variant improved upon the original M5 by adding a better latching lever for more secure attachment and improved accuracy.
- Manufacturers: Common makers include Imperial Knife, Utica Cutlery, and Columbus Milpar & Mfg. (MILPAR).
- Scabbard: It is traditionally paired with the M8A1 scabbard, which features a fiberglass body.
