Side Cap G.D.R." Grenzschutzboote"
€ 20,00
In the GDR, dark blue barques (side caps) were primarily worn by the crews of the Grenzbrigade Küste (Coastal Border Brigade) and the Volksmarine (Navy). Although the regular border troops wore olive green uniforms at the borders, the units on the barques followed naval tradition.
Details of the barque for border boats (GBK)
- Unit: The crews of the border security boats belonged to the Grenzbrigade Küste (Coastal Border Brigade). This was operationally subordinate to the Volksmarine, but organizationally part of the GDR Border Troops.
- Color & Material: The headgear was dark blue (navy blue), matching the working and shipboard uniforms of the naval forces.
- Versions:Men/NCOs: Simple version with a machine-embroidered cockade (the black-red-gold emblem of the GDR).
- Officers: Often equipped with piping and a more detailed cockade.
- Use: The cap served as a work and service cap aboard boats. During official shore leave or ceremonies, the cap (Schirmmütze) or the sailor's cap ("Tellermütze") was usually worn.
The Role of the Border Boats
The GBK boats were tasked with guarding the GDR's maritime borders, preventing escape attempts across the Baltic Sea, and observing military movements. The blue uniform clearly distinguished them from land units and was more practical for naval service.
