U.S. MC-140 Helicopter Support Team Helmet
€ 1.250,00
The MC-140 Helicopter Support Team (HST) helmet is a specialized protective helmet designed by the Gentex Corporation in the early 1980s for the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
Purpose and Function
- This helmet was specifically developed for members of the Helicopter Support Teams (HST). These are Marine units responsible for operations in a landing zone (LZ). Their primary task is attaching heavy external loads to the underside of hovering helicopters.
- Protection against debris: The helmet protects the wearer against flying debris and dust kicked up by large helicopters such as the CH-53 or CH-47.
- Communication: The helmet is equipped with a special communication set and cables (similar to those used by vehicle crews) to enable coordination in extremely noisy environments.
Design and Specifications
- The MC-140 was part of a series of helmets introduced around 1981 for specific roles within the USMC.
- Shell design: The helmet shell is often based on the DH-132A design.
- Interior: The helmet uses a liner (inner helmet) similar to that of the SPH-3/4 helicopter flight helmets.
- Ballistic variants: Although the standard MC-140 was intended for ground support, there was a later variant, the MC-140D Modified (1984). This had better ballistic protection (15 layers of Kevlar), making it stronger than the old steel M1 helmets.
- Rarity: For collectors, the MC-140 HST helmet is very rare, as it was produced in limited numbers for this specific niche role.
