Model 1942 (M42) steel helmet

This is an original Model 1942 (M42) Stahlhelm, produced by Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke in Schwerte.

Production Details

• Manufacturer (NS): The "NS" stamp stands for the manufacturer Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke.
• Size (64): The number "64" indicates the shell size, which is typically suitable for a head circumference of 56 cm or 57 cm.
• Lot Number (D442): The lot number "D442" refers to the specific batch of steel used during production. On M42 helmets, these stamps are almost always located at the rear of the rim (the skirt).

Paint and Configuration

• Apple Green & White Remnants: Although "apple green" (a smooth, bright green color) was the standard factory finish for early M35 helmets, it was officially replaced by the rougher "field gray" (Feldgrau) by the time the M42 was introduced in 1942.
• Paint History: The presence of white paint beneath the current apple green layer suggests that the helmet may have been given a winter whitewash camouflageduring the war. The current apple green layer was likely applied post-war or by a collector, as M42 helmets were not factory-issued in that specific color.
