Features of the Soviet Tank Goggles

• Design: The classic goggles (often designated as model PO-1 or PO-2) feature a distinctive folding metal frame.
• Lenses: They typically contain clear lenses for dust protection.
• Wear: The goggles were worn in combination with the iconic cloth or leather tank helmet (Tankoshlem), known for its vertical protective padded ribs.

What Purpose Did the Goggles Serve?

Driving inside a Soviet tank (such as the famous T-34 or the later T-54/T-55) was extremely grueling. The goggles were essential for:

• The Driver: When operating the tank with an open hatch, the goggles protected the eyes from splashing mud, insects, and harsh winds.
• Gunpowder Fumes and Dust: Firing the main gun released high amounts of gunpowder fumes and fine debris inside the cramped turret. The goggles provided crucial baseline protection against this.
