Bronze Swiss Plaque 15,5 cm
€ 150,00
The bronze Swiss plaque from the Foundation of the Swiss National Donation for our Soldiers and their Families is an object issued in 1919. The piece was designed and signed by the well-known Swiss medalist and sculptor Hans Frei (1868–1947).
This type of plaque was part of a large public fundraising campaign. Its purpose was to support Swiss soldiers and their families who had fallen into financial distress after the First World War due to economic consequences and prolonged border guard duties.
Characteristics & Background
- Design: An artistic Art Deco profile of a Swiss soldier looking to the left, wearing the then brand-new Swiss M1918 helmet. The front is signed "Hans Frei".
- Historical context: Although the fundraising campaign and the initial designs date back to the end of the war in 1918, the official foundation (Don National Suisse / Schweizerische Nationalspende) was formally established in January 1919 with a starting capital of 8 million Swiss francs from the proceeds. Larger plaques (such as the 15.5 cm variant) were sold to generous donors at the time.
