Belgian Military Decoration

The Belgian Military Decoration is an official military award established on December 22, 1873, by King Leopold II.

Two Main Categories

The decoration consists of two main categories, each awarded in multiple classes:

• For long service (seniority): Intended to reward military personnel for long and faithful continuous service within the armed forces. This is typically awarded to NCOs (non-commissioned officers) and enlisted personnel after a specific number of service years (such as 15 or 25 years).
• For exceptional service, bravery, or dedication: Awarded for exceptional acts, bravery, or special dedication during service. This variant can optionally be fitted with a war palm.
